About Us

In the first half of the 19th Century, Liverpool was one of the world’s most thriving ports, awash with money, opportunity and visitors from all over the Globe.

From his humble background in Ireland, Michael ‘Punch’ Tarmey travelled to Liverpool to see what the City had to offer. He arrived in 1902 as a champion fighter. Michael Tarmey was a well-known Bare-Knuckle fighter back in Dublin which is where he earned the nickname ‘Punch’ Tarmey. It was through winning a tournament that he earned the prize of two tickets to sail to Liverpool. He spent most of his time working down the mines and continuing with his boxing.

It is this history, of our owner’s Great Grandfather, that inspired the boxing theme to this Irish bar and the reason it has such authentic origins.
